At Cali Professionals, we utilize various techniques to promote learner retention and engagement in our custom online courses and training materials. One successful technique is content chunking – the method of separating content into small, bite-sized pieces of information. With content chunking, we take your ideas and organize them in a way that is manageable and easy for learners to remember, while also keeping content engaging.

How do we utilize content chunking to create impactful courses for our clients?
Prioritizing Course Information
When a client presents us with a concept but isn’t sure where to get started, we help by creating a plan of action to organize content in a way that is the most effective for learners. During the pre-development phase, we identify main content, primary supporting material and relevant visuals, and secondary supporting material. By determining a hierarchy of information, we can present information with a progression that builds on what has already been learned, as opposed to hopping back and forth between topics. To keep content bite-sized and organized, new topics will be separated and displayed within their own slides.
Acknowledging When Less Is More
When too much information is presented at once, learners will have difficulty remembering it. By including only relevant information that has been carefully selected, we are able to avoid this kind of memory burnout.
At Cali Professionals, we work with our clients’ SMEs to determine what information is key for learners and how it will promote success within their roles, as well as how it will help a client to meet their training goals. This allows us to cut out the noise and focus on the “need to have” versus the “nice to have” when developing an online course.
Lists and Visuals
We are mindful of learners’ busy schedules; by implementing features like bulleted lists, we can group information and emphasize key points so that it will still be memorable, even when a reader skims it. Because most learners are visual learners, we also use images and graphics to ensure that learners make sense out of the content and to direct attention, increasing the possibilities that the learners will retain what they learned.

Content chunking is just one of the various methods that our team uses to ensure that our clients’ training goals are met. Throughout the development process, the Cali Professionals team will work closely with you to personalize your content to keep your learners engaged, ensuring that they leave their online training armed with the proper tools and information for maximum success within their roles.
